Special teams is an important part of Madden NFL 10 that’s not talked about. Special team play allows you to change field position. This allows you to pin an offense in their own territory and allows you to have a short field on offense. Casual Madden players take special teams for granted because it’s not glamorous. IF executed properly special teams can change a game. Kickoffs are easier to execute then punts because you have blockers in front of you.

fielding punts are harder there’s nobody in front of you to help block. The key to punt returns is to make the first man miss. You need to consider the hang time of the punt also. The longer a punt stays in the air the more time the coverage team has to tackle you. Practice punting to pin your opponent in their own territory. This will give your defense an advantage because it keeps them off the field. It allows them to be more aggressive and gives your offense better field position.

Scoring on special teams can be just as good as scoring on defense. Special teams will change a game by changing field position. So many ways to score on special teams by running back a kickoff or punt for a touchdown. Another way to score is to block a punt and return it for a touchdown. Last way to score is to hit stick the kick returner or punt returner to create a fumble. After creating the fumble recover the football and score.

Remember to practice on side kicks this is something a lot of madden players take for granted. You never know you could be down late in a game and need to recover an onside kick. Onside kicks is the most exciting plays in football. The ball has to travel ten yards before it is recovered. If the ball goes out of bounds on a an onside kick the offense takes over. Practice using the kicking meter the key to an onside kick is getting a high bounce and recovering.

Last point before I close both kickers and punters should have strong legs. Kicking power should be 95 and above if possible for a strong leg. Punt returners and kick returners need to have speed acceleration agility and a kick return rating.
