Nintendo | How To Backup & Copy Wii Games
October 16, 2009 – 9:33 pmThe Nintendo Wii is one of the most popular games consoles in the World, with millions of people using it every day to entertain them. However, if you’ve got a Wii, you’ll know the problems that a damaged game disc can cause. Because the Wii only uses DVD discs, they are prone to getting scratched and damaged, making your games extremely fragile. Luckily, there’s a simple way to backup & copy your Wii games… and play them without a mod chip.
Because the Wii uses the popular DVD media (instead of Nintendo’s preferred cartridges), they have been forced to employ a lot of protective measures in order to stop people illegally copying their games. Because a few small-minded individuals have decided to copy games illegally, we have now got the very difficult task of copying our games for legal backup reasons. We do not condone the copying of games illegally, but if you want to make a legitimate copy of your Wii games, we know how.
You see, the copyright protection that Nintendo have used with the Wii is relatively simple. Like several other games manufacturers, they have chosen to encrypt their game discs so that only Nintendo Wii consoles can read them. This encryption is where the game is burnt onto the DVD in such a way that only a Wii console can read what it says… and things like computers only see a jumbled array of letters and words. This means that the games can be widely distributed to be played on Wiis, but cannot be used with the likes of DVD copying software.
If you try and copy a Wii game, the DVD copying tool will not be able to read it, resulting in your computer just copying a bunch of random words and letters to another DVD, which is useless. In order to make playable copies & backups of your Wii games, you need to be able to make a perfect 1:1 copy of the game, so that the Wii will not know that the game is not on the original game disc. And luckily, there’s a way you can do this.
You can actually copy Wii games very easily with a tool called “GameBackupSystem”. This tool has been created by an anonymous team, but we were able to backup and play 20+ Wii games with it. It copies your game discs perfectly, because it is able to read the copyright encryption on Wii games. This means that you can copy as many games as you want with the system, and then play them on your console without a mod chip.
