The Nintendo Wii is the latest games console to come from Nintendo, and with many new features, it’s one of the most advanced. However, the Wii has DVDs, which can easily get scratched and damaged. This means that many people are wanting to burn and play backup Wii games without a mod chip… and here’s how to do it.

Because the Wii uses DVDs, instead of Nintendo preferred "cartridges", it’s a lot easier to copy the games now. Knowing this, Nintendo have equipped their discs with a lot of copyright protection to make sure that no-one copies them illegally. This is okay, but because many people want to copy the games legally, it’s a big problem, especially when the discs are so easily damaged.

This means that if you want to protect your games against any potential problems that scratches or damages might cause, you will need to be able to copy the game even with the copyright protection. Sounds crazy? Not when you look at how the games are protected…

Wii games are protected by something called "Encryption". This is where data is written in a certain way that only someone who can unencrypt it can read it. Think of it as a sort of "special language", which only your Wii and Nintendo can understand. This means that if you try and copy the game, your PC will not be able to read the data, and will end up just copying a bunch of random words and text, which will not work.

To copy Wii games, you need to be able to copy the discs perfectly, including all the encrypted data. And to do that, you just need to get your PC to be able to read the data that’s on the discs. This is nearly impossible, unless you have the right tools or techniques that will allow your PC to read a set of encrypted data like this.

You can actually copy Wii games very easily with a tool called “GameBackupSystem”. This tool has been created by an anonymous team, but we were able to backup and play 20+ Wii games with it. It copies your game discs perfectly, including the encrypted sectors. This means that you can copy as many games as you want with the system, and then play them on your console without a mod chip.
