Considering the casual, local multiplayer audience that the Wii draws, it is rather surprising that this is the first Scene It? game on Nintendo’s console. The well known trivia series offers over 2800 questions in this latest iteration, taking video and audio clips from decades of primarily mainstream films.
Much of the game’s appeal is in its variety of inventive quiz formats which expands on and often deviates from traditional Q&A trivia style. One type involves watching a short movie clip and then answering questions from the clip such as ”What is the first exercise Mr. Miyagi asks of Daniel?’ or ‘What was the guy’s shirt color?’. For the chronologically inclined, one quiz requires organizing 4 films in order of release year. For fans of the Invisibles quizzes on Filmwise, Scene It? features a game where players have to identify films based on bodyless photos. Most gamers’ favorite quiz will undoubtedly be Pixel Flix, where players have to identify a film by looking at an 8-bit rendition of one of the movie’s scenes.
Predictably, the Wii Remote controls are easy to pick up even for non-gamers. Most quizzes are answered using the directional pad, though there are a couple quizzes that require the user to wave the remote, either to buzz in or collaborate with others in uncovering an obscured movie still.
Scene It? Bright Lights! Big Screen! keeps things current by including questions from films such as 2012 and The Box but also goes as far back as Casablanca and Citizen Kane. In the four hours we played, not once did we see any repeat questions or clips. It should also be noted that users have the choice between two game lengths, which can be less than 10 minutes or almost half an hour.
(This review is based on a 4 hour playthrough with 3 other players.)
