Nintendo Console | Sharp And Fujifilm Could Steal Nintendo’s Thunder

September 3, 2010 – 12:09 pm

Sharp and Fujifilm try to steal the limelight from Nintendo by releasing products with 3D screens just before the 3DS goes on sale.

Not satisfied with our ” 3DS simulator “? Well two other Japanese companies have products which could bring you the glasses-free 3D experience before Nintendo.

Fujifilm have just announced a camera which takes 3D photos and videos. Surprisingly this is a follow-up to a 3D camera which went on sale last year. This time around though, the camera will include a special 3DS style screen. Interestingly, Fujifilm are also offering lenticular (yes it’s a real word) prints so you can actually stick your 3D photos in a “real” photo album.

The camera is due for release in early September at a price of 399.

Sharp are also pushing to have the first product with the new 3D effect, aiming for an October release with a new Smartphone. There aren’t many details yet and it’s difficult to say how a phone could make use of 3D other than for games and films.

Sharp’s latest Smartphone, KIN, which used Microsoft’s mobile operating system was a major flop. While Sharp are trailing in the Smartphone stakes, they lead the way with portable 3D technology and were rumoured to be making the screens for the Nintendo 3DS. However, if the phone uses Android, it could be a big one up in the cool gimmick stakes against iPhone.

Whichever comes out first, you can be sure that neither will overshadow the 3DS launch. Nintendo’s console will be much more mainstream than either of these products for a few reasons. Price is a big issue and only the 3DS will cost less than 200. In fact the other two are likely to cost over 400. More importantly, the DS is the best selling games console ever. Its successor is bound to sell massively even if it only featured processor and graphical improvements. Add to that the huge amount of support from 3rd party developers and Nintendo have a massive product launch on their hands even before you bring ground braking 3D into the equation.
