Well, we all know Nintendo is awesome. But just how awesome? Well, according to Business Week, Nintendo is the World’s Best Company of 2009. The business magazine released its annual list of the 40 top companies and Nintendo came out on top, beating out such tech giants as Google, Apple, and Amazon. Sony and Microsoft were not included in the list.
So how exactly does one become the World’s Best Company? According to Business Week, which relied on management consulting firm A.T. Kearney to compile its results, traits include “a commitment to innovation, diversified portfolios, aggressive expansion, strong leadership, and a clear vision for the future.”
Nintendo, which has seen sales rise 36 percent annually over the past five years thanks to bold innovation, certainly fits this description.

My congrats to Nintendo. Hopefully they will keep coming out with innovative reliable products and good customer service.
Knowing our luck here though, it’s only a matter of time until the haters come in and post the typical crap…

And I got a SNES emulator the other day to play the games I’d missed out on (As a kid me and all my friends had the Megadrive/Genesis console). I played Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past on a long haul flight once as it was built into an entertainment unit in the back of the seat but apart from that I’d never played a SNES game. So I’m working my way through a best of SNES torrent (46 top games) and it’s great fun from platformers like SMW: Yoshi’s island 2 to the rpg mashup Super Metroid to the perfection of Secret of Mana and FF3(6), then there’s battletoads and Mario Kart, twinbee, Rocket Knight, Star Fox and many others. N64 and Gamecube delivered some of the most solid gaming experiences of my youth. The Wii on the other hand has diverged and doesn’t seem as appealing to me. But obviously it’s done wonders for Nintendo who realised the avid gaming community was too small and fickle to continue focusing all their efforts into it.

… And a commitment to commit highway robbery through licensing fees. But hey, I can’t knock them, they created a console that even my older relatives play. While I could care less about Wii Fit and Wii Knitting, they got the right idea. Good on them, as long as all of my games don’t end up being mainstream sugar titles with no real substance, but mass appeal.

You may have a point, but on the other hand, I’d be disappointed if Business Week’s conditions for deciding what companies have the best combination of money making, size, reliability, quality, and satisfaction relied entirely on the opinions of a relatively small subset of 16-30 year old men.

…With the "commitment to innovation, diversified portfolios, aggressive expansion" Parts. THE "strong leadership and a clear vision for the future."………NOT SO much. I give those to Sony and M$. But hey….that’s just me ;P Jonathon_Striker

and that’s probably about right. If there is one thing Nintendo is great for, it is realiability. You expect a Mario game, a Zelda game, a Donkey Kong game, and a Pokemon game. You expect games for kids, and some for teens, maybe a few adult games, and great party games that your grandparents and non-gaming girlfriends (or boyfriends) can play. You expect a reliable handheld console, and Nintendo has at least always done well with that, if nothing more.

I think most hardcore gamers would disagree with Nintendo being so great. I love Nintendo as much as the next Nintendo fan boy, but don’t think they have had the greatest games lately. Good for them either way though. They must be doing something right.

But the numbers don’t lie. A 36 percent rise in sales over the the last five years is rediculous in this economy.
