Nintendo | Nintendo Unimpressed By Steve Jobs’ Reality Distortion Field
September 3, 2010 – 3:34 pm“It is impossible for us to comment until it is made clear which products and time periods are being referenced, what the specific data is and the source for that data,” wrote Nintendo of America in a carefully worded email response.
Indeed, it’s difficult to know what data Jobs used to arrive at his conclusion because the presentation did not quote any sources. Apple has not responded to a request I made for further clarification yet either.
But there is more than a little statistical wizardry going on here, and it seems like Apple is deliberately being misleading. For instance, if we take lifetime unit sales, Nintendo DS has sold 132 million units, while Sony PSP has sold more than 50 million units . The iPod touch has probably sold in the tens of millions, given that the 120 million iOS devices include iPhones and iPads. In other words, it’s still behind both rivals.

Technologizer has suggested that Apple’s comparison may have been drawn from last quarter’s sales. Nintendo sold 3.15 million DS units and Sony 1.2 million PSP units, for a combined total of 4.35 million. Apple meanwhile, sold 9.4 million iPods , including models besides touch like Nano and Shuffle. It’s conceivable that 4.35 million of those sales were iPod touch. But even then, not all iPod touch users necessarily use the multi-purpose device to play games.
Companies make claims like these all the time, but you would hope that one with a “think different” ethos would be, well, different.
